VERSO arrives at the hamptons with 'bridge' exhibition at six square house

a unique home becomes a verso gallery space

For those embarking out to the Hamptons this summer, VERSO Works has taken to Bridgehampton to transform the Six Square House — built in 2021 by Young Projects and a work of art in its own right — into a captivating gallery space. VERSO gallery is just coming up on its one-year anniversary this summer and has already made itself known for its exceptional curation of design and interiors. Aptly titled ‘Bridge,’ this latest exhibition has opened its doors on June 25th, 2023, inviting visitors to explore the interplay between aesthetics, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions.

While VERSO originally planned to showcase works by twenty-five designers, the number had quickly grown to thirty-six. These talents hail from diverse corners of the world, and together create a must-see collection to be explored — all beneath and around the sweeping rooftop of the fascinating Six Square House.

beneath the curving gables of the six square house

Designed by Young Projects, the architecture studio led by Bryan Young, Six Square House serves as an ideal backdrop for VERSO’s ‘Bridge’ exhibition. This 3,500 square-foot home has been thoughtfully converted into an airy, indoor-outdoor gallery space that perfectly complements the showcased designs. Its harmonious blend of natural light and open spaces is an intimate setting for visitors to engage with the diverse range of exhibits.

‘Bridge’ brings together designers from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas, showcasing their unique perspectives and design philosophies. Some works are driven by a dramatic interplay between materials and geometry, while others breathe new life into traditional design methods and historical motifs with sustainable materials in contemporary forms. While each piece takes shape with its own distinct form and function, a shared commitment to innovation unifies the collection.

contemporary designers

A Sólida table by contemporary Brazilian design group Estudio Rain greets visitors at once upon entering the Six Square House. A low-slung stack of softly curved wooden blocks, the digitally-produced table stands out for its synthetic and natural contrasts.

Another standout collection is the Ibuju collection by Francisco Jaramillo, which is found outside the home beneath a shaded pool house. Drawing inspiration from his Colombian heritage, Jaramillo weaves renewable Yaré fiber sourced from southern Colombia into benches, stools, and tables. This harmonious fusion of tradition and sustainability exemplifies the exhibition’s ethos.

Leading from the kitchen to a smaller sitting room, a tapestry titled Fingerprint hangs beneath a skylight to showcase the meticulous felted technique by artist Sagarika Sundaram, while emphasizing the height of the sunlit room. Another highlight is a Melting Table and Chair by Clara Jorisch, which sit against a full-height window and disappear into the tall grasses beyond.

Works by Objects of Common Interest can also be found throughout the property. The Brooklyn and Greece-based studio showcases its oversized Tube Chair within the home’s lofty living space, while one of its sculptural and abstract Tube Lights can be discovered in the shaded central courtyard — the last remainder of a larger installation of the lighting collection in 2022. At last, a walk along the grounds behind the Six Square House will lead visitors to a forested yard of lush ferns. Here, the studio’s Formations series shows a landscape of scattered blue objects, the simple, curving shapes suggesting an array of chairs and stools among the trees.

The centerpiece of the shaded courtyard is a Fungi Lighting series, rising as a cluster of organic-capped lamps by designer Guilherme Wentz

iconic 20th century pieces

While the Jaramillo and Estudio Rain pieces celebrate contemporary aesthetics, they harmoniously coexist with timeless designs by Pierre Chapo, the 1927-born Parisian designer. Crafted with exquisite precision, Chapo’s wooden tables, stools, and chairs were originally created in the 1970s and are still painstakingly fabricated in the same South of France workshop established by the late designer and his family half a century ago. These iconic designs demonstrate the lasting power of masterful craftsmanship, and can be discovered throughout the house.
